Class Descriptions & Prerequisites

Most of our classes are open to anyone who meets the minimum age requirement! Class descriptions, as well as additional requirements for our Intermediate and Advanced classes (taught by Miss Brieanna) are detailed below. Please note that we do not use years of experience alone to advance students to higher-level classes as each student learns differently. If you have been pre-approved by our staff to take any classes with prerequisites, you will already be able to register in our Parent Portal. Otherwise, please contact info@j-dapa.org to set up an audition or with any additional questions.

Our 11+ beginner/intermediate classes in jazz, tap, and lyrical – taught by Miss Juliana – are great options for students who are looking to move up to our higher-level classes in the future, or to take alongside other classes to boost technique. None of our classes (with the exception of Pre-Peewee and Peewee) have upper age limits, so students who meet the age requirement for a higher-level class but do not have the required dance experience should register for the beginner or beginner/intermediate option.

Beginner Acro

Acro combines acrobatic/gymnastics skills with dance. This 45 minute class focuses on skills such as somersaults, splits, handstands, and backbends. This class will build strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and confidence.

Acro students must be enrolled in a jazz, ballet, or lyrical class. Acro classes do not perform in the Winter recital.

Intermediate Acro

To register for this class, students MUST be able to independently perform the following prerequisite skills:

  • Backbend from standing
  • Cartwheel (at least one side without a spot)
  • Roundoff
  • Somersault/forward roll
  • Kick up into a handstand

Students without these skills on the first day of class will be asked to join Beginner Acro regardless of years of experience – NO EXCEPTIONS.

It is recommended that Acro students also take Jazz and/or Stretch and Technique class. This class does not perform in the Winter recital.

Acting classes will introduce students to the techniques used by actors who play musical and straight play theater scenes. Basic acting techniques will be taught through theater games as well as skits. Students will be given lessons in freeing the body of nervous tension, projection, articulation as well as developing confidence, presence, and emotional expressivity.

Theater classes have been proven to enhance a child’s Confidence, Public Speaking, Teamwork, Poise, Conversation, Social skills, and more!

Ballet is the foundation for many forms of dance. Ballet classes help people of all ages and genders work on posture, strength, flexibility, musicality, fitness and much more. During class, students will work on body alignment, barre and center work, and across the floor combinations. Ballet is a fantastic class to take in conjunction with other dance classes if you are looking to improve your technique.

Our Intermediate Ballet class is open to students with 3+ years of lyrical or ballet experience.

Hip hop is a fun, high energy dance style that encompasses a wide range of street styles such as breaking, locking, and popping, set to upbeat, appropriate, hip hop music.  Through this class, dancers develop musicality, creativity and coordination. Dancers are encouraged to take jazz class in addition to hip hop.

This new class is being offered by invitation and audition only. Students enrolled in this class must have displayed a focused work ethic in the previous dance session, have had good attendance and 3+ years of dance experience.

Having 3 years dance experience does not automatically mean students are ready for this class. Email info@j-dapa.org if your child is interested in this class to see if they qualify and/or set up an audition time.

One of the most popular styles of dance! Jazz is an energetic and fun class set to upbeat music. A typical jazz class begins with a center warm up that strengthens and stretches the body. In this class, dancers will be introduced to a variety of dance styles such as jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop and acrobatics. Students will begin to learn basic dance technique while participating in creative movement and using their imagination. This is a great class to help our youngest dancers improve their gross motor skills and self confidence.

Peewee Combo

In this class, dancers will be introduced to a variety of dance styles including jazz, tap, ballet, hip hop and acrobatics. The purpose of this introductory class is to help students develop motor skills through a variety of movements. This combo class focuses on learning basic dance vocabulary, improving flexibility, balance and learning choreography helping to boost dancers’ confidence both on and off the stage.

This class is dedicated to stretching and strengthening the body to be able to correctly execute dance movements.  Strong muscles are vital to protecting a dancer’s body and improving dance skills. Students will work on improving their jazz, lyrical and ballet technique through various center and across the floor exercises. This class offers an opportunity for dancers to focus on improving specific skills so that they are able to improve their turns and leaps. This class is highly recommended for all intermediate dancers and any dancer hoping to advance into intermediate classes.

This class does not perform in our Winter recital.

Tap class gives the student a unique opportunity to transform into a percussive musician through the use of metal plates on the toe and heels of the dancer’s shoes. Tap focuses on creating rhythms and sounds which enhances a dancer’s ability to count music, feel the rhythm and increase their balance and coordination across dance genres.

Intermediate Tap

For students with 3+ years of tap experience or by invitation from instructor.
